Pendant light. 2021

Minimal silhouette formed by glass and brass plays an integral part on the lamp. The surface of the brass reflects a warm glow when the light is on. With the combination of handcrafted parts and materials I wanted to create a calm arrangement that resembles jewelry.

Suova is designed in spring 2021 and was presented at SPARK exhibition, Lokal Gallery 5.8.–4.9.2021. Spark exhibition presented new local glass, as interpreted by the young and organic generation.

“The breakthrough of the Finnish art industry originally took place largely through glass work, and Finnish glass is still highly valued. The tradition of making glass in dates far back in Finland, yet the skill has long been endangered. Fortunately, however, a new playful and courageous generation has emerged as challengers of the old classics – and in recent years, glass, as a material, has attracted many new artists and designers. The new Finnish glass is distinguished from the classics by its wild, organic and sculptural nature. Although there is still room for utility glassware, the new glass created in the glass cabins of Nuutajärvi, Riihimäki, Aalto University and Suomenlinna steps into something previously unseen. The Spark exhibition brings together new glass artists and designers who represent examples of this phenomenon. The exhibition is curated in collaboration with artist Milla Vaahtera.”

Both traditional handcrafting methods and modern techniques have been used in the making of wooden mold. Glass part has been modeled as a 3D image in Rhino. The 3D image was turned into a file for the CNC machine, which was used to carve the final shape for glassblowing.

Collaboration with glassblowers

High quality handcraft requires know-how and collaboration. I’ve worked with precious metals and know how the understanding of certain materials requires years of practices and repetition, not to mention experimentation. It has been inspirational to work alongside some of the best glassblowers in Finland. I greatly admire their skill in handling glass, a material that gives designer manifold possibilites.

Variations

Variations of the piece, some of which were made into prototypes.
